Yes $6000. is a lot, when you can take classes at college that do a lot of the things that are outdoors related. Spending the summer traveling is cool though and maybe doing a long trek on a cheaper budget over the summer is a better deal. You might try hiking a portion of the PCT along the John Muir Trail for example. There are lots of ways to gain outdoor experiences with out cleaning out your savings account.

I am an old scouter retired from being a scoutmaster for many years but still participate in scouting programs they offer a wealth of information training and leadership that you could get into and benefit for years to come so I highly recommend that route.
