Pytanie: How do you hang onto the small rocks?

( Wstecz )

Answer #1:

First, It is best to keep your weight over your feet. Women climbers I know do that better than men who use their upper body strength to try to climb. Next, there are times when finger strength comes into play, but that is later when you are doing more difficult things. There are several ways to hold on to a hold. You can grasp the rock different ways, just as you can use your feet in different ways. Ideally you might find a hold where you can relax your hand over a hold, but not always. The following link is to a video on the subject of handholds. But remember, it is just one of many things you will learn as you gain experience. You might consider John Long's book on rock climbing where he covers some basics. Good luck.

Answer #2:

holding your whole weight on a single hand (or both hands) means you're trying to climb solely on strength and are ignoring the technique. it's normal in the beginning, but the more you try to rely on your head instead of your strength, the faster you'll progress. you should always climb head-legs-hands, instead of hands-legs-head(panic).

as for gripping onto small holds in general, it's all about the strength of your finger tendons, and the best way to develop it is to climb regularly. if you practice 4-5 times a week, your tendons will get strong within a month or two, and you'll be able to grip onto most holds. just be careful not to overwork them, because no climbing injury can set you back like a ruptured tendon. if your fingers hurt a little after the gym, that means they're getting stronger. if they keep hurting the next day, you've overworked them, so take it easier next time, or make a pause until they stop hurting.

good luck, keep climbing :)

Answer #3:

Lizard and T both have the answers, I'm just grabbing up two more points ;)

Answer #4:

Agreed, Lizard King and the other are completely right. It comes with experience and thus, technique. But it's not just technique, finger strength is also important and the only way to get that kind of finger/hand strength is to climb.

Oh, and those little holds are called "crimps"
